Perhaps one of the most scenic and bike friendly areas to bicycle, Cape Cod is home to a ton of great trails for bikes.
The Cape Cod rail trail is a 22-mile long stretch of paved trail that follows a former railroad right-of-way through the towns of Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Orleans, Eastham and Wellfleet. It is very well maintained.
It's located in the mid-Cape area and offers many opportunities to get off the trail and visit a beach. Along the way, you'll ride past Nickerson State Park, the Salt Pond Visitors Center at Cape Cod National Seashore, and the National Seashore Headquarters. You'll also be able to find food and water, and public restrooms at these locations.
In the towns along the way, you'll be able to enjoy lunch or dinner at local restaurants, and good accommodations are available as well, but you'd do well to secure your reservations ahead of time especially during the peak season. Cape Cod is very popular.
The great thing about biking at the Cape is that you'll be free from the lines of automobile traffic that seem to get worse each summer.
There are also many local bike paths and bikeways in towns scattered throughout the Cape. And biking between towns via road routes is also very pleasant.
The lack of any serious hills at the Cape make it perfect for cycling.
If you have extra time and lots of energy you can even ride all the way out to Provincetown along the highway. There are some trails in the dunes out near Provincetown, though they have hills and may be windy or sandy at various times of the year.
In a leisurely 1.5 hour ride our group rode from the trail head in Dennis to Chatham, where we enjoyed walking around the quaint shopping district and had some fantastic Ice Cream, after which we swam a bit at the gorgeous white sand beach nearby. After retracing our path back to the bike rotary near Harwich, we headed north along the rail trail to Orleans, where we stopped for a tasty lunch before heading back home to Dennis.
It was a good day on the road. On the following day we road back up the rail trail again, this time up to Nauset beach which is right near the Salt Pond Visitor's Center at the National Seashore. In the park there is a fun network of pathways that lead to the beach. You can buy food at the beach and use the restrooms. And of course you can spend some time lounging at the beach, which is just what we did.
