May is National Bike Month and there are a number of events scheduled around the country involving bicycles, including their use, tours, and events challenging people to ride to work. Of note is that Friday, May 15th is Bike to Work Day, at least it is here in Massachusetts. Other states may have other dates set up. If nothing else, get on your bike on the 15th and ride to work!
You can find out more about events in your area by visiting The League of American Bicyclists web site at www.bikeleague.org. Just click on the little National Bike Month emblem and then find your state in the list.
What better way to build awareness about how reliant we have become upon our cars for most things in our lives than by commuting to work on your bike. Simply being in good enough physical condition to make the commute is a wakeup call for lots of folks
As one's conditioning improves, being out and about on a bike becomes even more fun!
I feel pretty lucky because I've planned my life based on proximity to my house so I could either walk or ride my bike to work. You too, could make a similar plan for your life.
The example of the Dutch is a really amazing one. In Holland, everyone commutes via bicycle. Approximately 60% of journeys in Amsterdam are made on bicycles. Obviously, there are times when using a car is necessary, but for general transport in a city built to accommodate them, bicycles definitely have their advantages.
More and more cities and towns are becoming aware of what bicycle commuters want and are making efforts to become more bicycle-friendly.
