[Find a Rail Trail]

Rail Trails and the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy

Rail Trails are a growing network of trails built on unused railroad corridors throughout the nation.

The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy is a nonprofit organization founded in 1986 that works with communities to preserve these unused rail corridors by transforming them into usuable trails for the general public — enhancing the health of America's environment, economy, neighborhoods and people.

As an organization, the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy promotes policy at the national and state levels to create the conditions that make trail building possible They are headquartered in Washington, D.C. and also have offices throughout the United States to help foster and assist local efforts in creating rail-trails.

Search their database for selected paved trails suitable for road biking. Because of their original use as railroad tracks, most rail trails are built on moderately graded terrain and are well suited for beginner to intermediate cyclists.
